BobHope: Yritin eilen kuunnella tuota Jorn/Landen uudempaa ja täytyy sanoa että biisimateriaali oli kyllä niin perin tyhjänpäiväistä perusrieskaa että huh huh. Laulajat on molemmat ihan maailman huippuja hevipuolella ja äänet sopii yhteen, mutta ei niitä biisejä jaksa vaan kuunnella...
 
Nojoo, en mäkään oo sitä uudempaa jaksanut kuunnella muuta kuin muutaman kerran. Sen sijaan se eka levy on mun mielestä ihan vitun hyvä.

My apologies for the uber-delay in getting an update posted; we've had to coordinate MJR and me, band management, and multiple people at both the US label office AND the Euro label office spanning quite a few time zones in all. Hopefully it'll go more smoothly from here on out as we all adjust to working together, but for now, here's your very belated update!
 
Just spoke with MJR and here's the latest scoop! Mike said that the drums and most of the rhythm guitars are all recorded. At the moment, they are fine tuning the lyrics and melodies, during which time Russ will also be recording his vocals. Personally, I get more excited about this cd the more Mike tells me about it; I am quite secure in saying that it will be well worth the wait.
 
While the band is busy working on the cd, we'd like to keep you busy as well; the band needs your help, in two areas. Firstly: the existing FAQ on the band's website was put together when 'The Odyssey' came out; obviously that was quite a while ago and lots has changed since then, including some significant gear/endorsement changes as well as a label change. So that's where you come in: help us put together a new FAQ for the new website. What do you want to ask the band? PLEASE do not send in questions like 'when are you going to play insert location?' or 'when will you make a dvd?'; best to stick to general information questions if you want the band to answer them. Send in your questions to symxfaq@gmail.com with "FAQ" in the subject line, and they'll be sent to the band; who knows, your question may show up in the FAQ on the band's new site! For those who have been wondering, we're anticipating that the new site will launch around the same time as the new cd.
 
Secondly: what band(s) would you like to see tour with/open for Symphony X? Who do you think would match best with SymX, or bring in a good crowd? Send your suggestions to symxfaq@gmail.com and perhaps you'll get to see the band
you choose on SymX's next tour.

Samalta haiskahtaa ku edellistä levyä nauhottaessa. Kaikessa hiljaisuudessa fiilaillaan, jossain kohtaa tulee kaks sokerisen paskaa kuvaa Romeosta studion tarkkaamossa ja lopulta ulos tulee helvetin kova lätty. Eksje?

Kokolailla tuore tuttavuus tämä, Russel Allen on tosin tuttu Lucassenin Star Onelta ja siitähän se mielenkiinto heräsikin bändiä kohtaan koska miehen vokalisointi sopii korvaan. Paradise Lost tuli hommattua ja heti perään V, spotifystä on tullut maisteltua muutakin. Ja maistuuhan se, saisivat vääntää mieluusti uutta materiaalia...

During a brand new interview with DJ JC Green of Metal Messiah Radio's "Heavy Metal Thunder" show, vocalist Russell Allen of New Jersey's progressive metal masters SYMPHONY X revealed that the band has set "Iconoclast" as the title of its eighth album, due later this year via Nuclear Blast Records.
 
When asked what stage of the recording/mixing process the new CD is in, Allen replied, "We are in post-production, so the album is pretty much almost done. At this point, mixes are being wrapped up and finalized and it's off to mastering and should be ready for release in a few months definitely first quarter of 2011. We've got the artworks all done, we're taking pictures next week... all that good stuff. So everything's on track for release pretty soon."
 
Regarding the sound of "Iconoclast" and how it compares to that of 2007's "Paradise Lost", Russell said, "Sonically, it's in the realm of that one in a way, in terms of the sound of things; the guitar sound is a little different. Basically, the album is pretty intense probably the most intense record we've ever done; it's chock-full of riffs tons of great riffs. It's heavy, the music, but the singing is very melodic in terms of its... the choruses are real strong, the verses are real strong, but I'm singing aggressively a lot of that going on 'cause the topic is, again, very dark; you know, that's what we do. So the album's very powerful. And, of course, we do have one song that's like a little mini-epic, so to speak, and it's the lightest a light, light, light song. So there is a contrast on the record of that one song that has that sort of 'Paradise Lost' feel to it; it's a ballad, I guess, if you wanna call it that."
 
He continued, "This album will contain a good body of work that harkens back to a lot of early metal some early metal and a lot of SYMPHONY X standards that you guys know already, and a little bit of a newer sound, too, here and there just a newer direction. Some of the singing parts, I tried some more rhythmic things that I was hearing that sounded pretty cool, and some different things that I'm doing with my voice now that are a little more looking to the future of what we hear the music going. It's just the next progression for us, where we are as writers and stuff, but it's pretty intense it's way more intense than 'Paradise Lost', if you can believe that."
 
When asked about the "Iconoclast" lyrical concept, Russell said, "It is basically just the idea of machines taking over everything and all this technology we put our society into pretty much being our demise. It's a story we were all familiar with, but we put our own spin on it. It's not a linear story in terms of... This is just the theme of the record, so all the songs are in that theme, but they're not connected in any sort of story way there's no characters of any of that stuff it's just a theme. Like PINK FLOYD's 'The Dark Side Of The Moon', it's really just a theme of the dark side of the moon one song deals with death, the other one deals with time... You know what I mean?! So it's the same kind of thing. I'm not comparing the two albums by any means don't misunderstand me but in terms of the idea of a concept, so to speak, the concept is there, but it's not a story record not like 2002's 'The Odyssey', where the song 'The Odyssey' is that story."

Yep, wait until you hear who the guitarist is. I hope to provide further details soon, but the rest of the high-profile line-up is very interesting indeed.
 
Meanwhile Portnoy is also recording with Steve Morse, Neil Morse, and Dave LaRue for a new album - under the watchful eye of producer Peter Collins (Rush).

Mulle tuli lähes päinvastainen kokemus, hyviä melodioita ja groovaavia riffejä. Ihan hyvä vaan, että sukkahousuista on päästetty eroon.

Jotenkin vaan jaksaa huvittaa kommentit tyyliin "olipa pettymys kun bändi ei soita niin kuin ennen"... Totta, onhan näitäkin jotka junnaa siinä samassa konseptissa vuosikymmenet, vaikkapa AC/DC, siinä tuttua ja turvallista...

Hyvä vaan, jos kuulostaa Paradiselta, on nimittäin bändin paras levy! Odotukset ovat korkealla.

Mielipiteensä jokaisella. Tottakai bädit kehittyvät, eikä tyyli pysy samanlaisena. Ehkä tässä uudemmasa Symphonyn materiaalissa itselleni "pettymyksenä" on tullut se, että biisit ovat suoraviivaistuneet aikalailla ja tuntuu, että sinfonisuus on saanut väistyä kitarariffivetoisempien biisien tieltä. Ei olisi pitänyt puhua muutenkaan "pettymyksestä", liian vahva sana tähän tilanteeseen.

Sama juttu. Uutta tai vanhaa, kaikki käy. Paradise lostia ei ehkä niin montaa kertaa ole jaksanut pyörittää, liekö sitten johtunut suoraviivaisuudestaan ja "helppoudestaan". Odyssey taasen on sellainen levy, ettei taida olla millään bändillä lättyä, mitä olisin kuunnellut yhtä paljon.
