Washburn's T24, our only test subject made in Vietnam, is a gorgeous, earthy-feeling instrument that conjures up the classic "hippie sandwich" moniker for basses constructed from multi-colored wood laminates. Its oil finish felt smooth and enhanced the mahogany bodies' subtle figure. The T24's shallow C-profile neck feels good under the thumb, and the multi-laminate construction was well executed. The beautiful bubinga fingerboard displayed excellent fretwork. The bass neck-dived on my lap, but it balanced well on a strap, thanks to the oversize upper horn.
In our live testing, the Taurus produced dark, velvety sounds that had pleasant, full-bodied warmth. The twin volume pots were switched; I expect the knob closest to the bridge to control bridge volume, not the other way around. The Taurus doesn't pump out high-end twinkiness and stellar sheen, but it worked great for styles that require room-filling support. It worked particularly well on a quick fusion groove, where fast attack and clear midrange definition were essential. The Washburn combines distinctive tone with the seductive good looks of classic boutique basses. Comments: "Dark and woody." "Good lows, but I'd like more upper-mid grind for rock." "Great jazzy, fusion-style bass." "Classy good looks." "Looks like a custom."
