If this is your first box, you probably aren't going to figure this all out right away, but here are some basics. More air volume (deeper body or wider body) tends to emphasize bass, up to a point. Past that point, and you get mushy and poorly defined soung. Smaller soundholes tend to produce a sharper tone, up to the point that you start getting tinny. Larger soundholes can richen sound, but then you risk that mushy thing again. With mahogany, you want to thin your back to about .110 - .105, and sides to about .090 - .085. Thicker than that, and it really does affect the sound - same as choking off the soundhole. Your top, being sitka, can go as thin as .100, depending on your bracing.
 
The shape, as you have read, is largely aesthetic. If you want a bassier tone, like a Martin, but you don't want a big-hipped box, then make the sides wider (increase volume). If you're after a tenor sound, either narrow the hips or make the box a little more shallow.
 
Shape is probably not as critical as air volume, soundhole size, and bracing (heavy bracing can stifle sound, or - paradoxically - free it up). You have to experiment.

Joo. Mutta ei se ole ihan noin yksinkertaista kuitenkaan. Kannen rimoituksella säädellään basso/diskantti tasapaino eikä se ole kovin yksinkertainen toimenpide.
 
Tämä muuten on hyvä kirja, ostin sen itselleni n. 10 vuotta sitten akateemisesta kirjakaupasta helsingissä.

Eikse mene niin, että tilavuuden suurentuessa kopan resonointitaajuus putoaa alemmas eikä mitään varsinaista korostumista tapahdu? Paitsi tietysti joku taajuus natsaa paremmin kitaran äänialaan kun joku muu, mutta periaatteessa...

Näin se taitaa olla, mutta kyllä se jostain syystä tuntuu korostuvan. Akustinen kitara on niin tarkka rakenteensa kanssa että kaikki vaikuttaa väistämättä kaikkeen.
