Stevie Ray Vaughanin Double Troublen basisti Tommy Shannon kirjoittaa yhdessä bassolehdessä opetusartikkelissaan näin:

To review, a dead note is performed by picking a string while you lightly rest one of your fretting fingers on it - the string should not be pressed against the fretboard. The result is a pitchless, percussive sound (indicated in the tablature by an X) that provides a subtle rhythmic push to the bass line. Most often, a dead note is immediately followed by a clearly articulated note played on the beat. If the muted note is picked with the middle finger, the next note is generally picked with the index finger, and vice versa. Dead notes are intended to be almost transparent, so be sure to perform them with subtlety.

A "ghost note" is a note that has a definite pitch but is picked either very lightly or played staccato, which means that it is sounded as briefly as possible. Like a dead note, a ghost note is typically played on the eight-note upbeat and is intended to be melodically and harmonically transparent while providing valuable rhythmic punch to a line.
"When a stupid man is doing something he is ashamed of, he always declares that it is his duty." - George Bernard Shaw
