" NOWEN
Essence Of Fear
(Violent Journey Records)
48:36min

It's been just a year ago when the Finnish Death / Thrash Metal combo NOWEN released their debut record ("Nothing But Hate") through an independent Finnish label Violent Journey Records - and this follow-up album, titled "Essence Of Fear", came out from them already. Woah, cannot blame them for any laziness songwriting-wise anyway, but then again I am hoping their follow-up record does not sound like it would be some sort of a rushed thing since so little time has passed by in between their 2 albums. So, does "Essence Of Fear" sound like a rushed effort then? Nope, not at all. In fact, it sounds like a more mature, challenging and polished effort from them compared to the times of their debut album. This time, you can hear from everything the guys have truly taken their time, and tried to make an as good album as possible from the top of their skills they have. If "Nothing But Hate" was overall a more straightforward package from NOWEN, on "Essence Of Fear" they have clearly added a few more dangerous curves into the songs, just to make things a bit more interesting both for listeners and themselves also. Obviously this prog-ish bug has bitten the guys pretty badly as a matter of speaking, leaving a vast enough amount of poison into these lads' blood circulating system to make the band to sound like a more progressive era DEATH here and there, which ain't any bad sign in my books anyway. There's undoubtedly a fair enough dose of "Human", "Individual Thought Patterns" and "Symbolic" eras DEATH squeezed into "Essence Of Fear", so in that sense I'd say the NOWEN camp is heading towards way more interesting yet rewarding times musically. Chuck's strong ghost is definitely a part of "Essence Of Fear" - and nothing stops me liking the fact NOWEN have been able to show their own tribute this way to one of the forefathers of Death Metal, Chuck Schuldiner. However, don't read me wrong as it's not only about aping DEATH's pro-gish era the best they can on "Essence Of Fear" but also about throwing in something of their own as well. With many levels of musical variation (unexpected tempo changes - from fast and slower tempos, nice and almost amazingly catchy melody lines, beautifully audible yet very challenging bass parts and so on) they have managed to absorb into this record, it's already certain that NOWEN have finally started making things to happen for them. All the 10 songs they have got for "Essence Of Fear", speak for some great musical potential the guys have. It's gonna be interesting to see which type of musical way they will choose for themselves from this surprisingly good record onward, when the right time comes to record the band's 3rd album. I for one, am already excited to find that out. www.myspace.com/nowenband "

"Nowen - Essence of Fear
Violent Journey Records, 2012

The year has not yet started but I already have a nomination for ugliest artwork of the year and it is not even a power metal sleeve! It comes from Finland and luckily there lies great music behind. Melodic thrash and death metal with a slight technical raid and a relatively sound dated.

Headbanging! That must have been about the central theme around this album. Not only the choruses, the long instrumental passages with delicious 'hellish' solos invite you to swing around the head. Death and thrash appear on Essence of Fear, that means some form of aggression and brutality meet. It includes seagoing and depth, without necrosis or to sound catchy. Not everything is as strong, Sacrifice for Nothing to feel free to start talking about stuffing, but overall speaking, it is passable.

Thrash metal so brutalized by both melody and technique (check the bass). No "wow" but a "yeah", especially the long instrumental passages with the above-mentioned dynamic solos give this picture to take it to the end to maintain. "

Hra.

It seems that it is not rare to form a band at some point and release the first full length album many years later. Thats the case for the Finnish NOWEN that was formed in 1999 but only managed to release the debut album, Nothing But Hate in 2010, having previously released a demo in 2002 and an EP in 2005. But now, it seems the Finnish quartet are finally on the right path, since their second album, Essence Of Fear, is coming out in a little less than two years.

The almost instrumental theres also a growl- intro song, Intro II, is a great example of what follows: a mid tempo rhythm with some nice leads and melodies, a killer bass and general a heavy sound; although after a couple of spins it feels like the first song is trying to hold the beast down, this is set free during the first notes of the second song, The Egotist strikes with killer riffs, pounding drums, fast solo and harsh-to-Death Metal vocals mixed with really nice melodies and a vague touch of blackness. Sacrifice For Nothing, providing the listener with a great time and some neck pain (I can only imagine what will happen in places where they will perform this songs. Oh wait, I think I know: total mayhem!). This song puts a break to the previous frenetic rhythm with a general mid-tempo pace, slower melodic riffs and some great bass passages. But it seems that the beast couldnt be held back for long and the next tracks put things back in the right track, the killer one, although in the last two songs there is a change between a fast and a mid pace.

Essence Of Fear is an album that will certainly give the listener a hell of a time and many re-spins; no one will be satisfied with just one. The performances are great, with the bass getting the leading role many times standing side by side with the killer guitars and the pummeling drums. NOWEN proved that they can serve great fast and slow tunes and they dont just know how to play fast. Furthermore, the many great ideas scattered throughout the album and the many melodies make this album very interesting. Yep, 2012 seems to begin in the best of ways.

Hyvin toimii tää uus, riffeistä tulee paikoin Leprosy/ Spiritual ajan Death mieleen. Ehkä tuo laulun muutos tukee myös tätä fiilistä. Jatkakaa samaa linjaa!

Almost two years after the release of their debut album Nothing But Hate Finnish Nowen returns with a new album called Essence of Fear. It seems Nowen are some happy lads according to their album titels, their ep from 2005 came as Where Hell Begins and their demo from 2002 was called Cursed Or Blessed. The press sheet of the album states: The album is a journey through darkness and futility that surrounds human experience. Fear, disgust and lack of all comprehension have inspired the band to record an album that is paradoxically more soulful than anything that the regular metal world has to offer nowadays.

That made me curious cause it would mean that Nowen delivers something fresh and inspiring. Well, for that part im a little disappointed cause its basically all done before. But nevertheless Essence of Fear is a big step forward for Nowen as they fitted themselves with a more mature sound than on their debut album. Also the song-writting shows a huge improvement and Nowen let us hear a more progressive kind of thrashy death metal with a lot of variation in the eleven songs while it never looses the aggression or the fast forward riffing and rhythms. Think of some technical death metal bands and then loose the technicality but keep the interesting ideas, in a place like that Essence of Fear can be placed.

The band uses many levels of variation from fast to slower tempos, catchy melody lines and some strong bass parts which can be nicely heard on Essence of Fear. And the whole production can be mentioned here as its truly well done. Sharp and not to heavy so the musical ideas are thrown upon you like a razorblade.

Nowen has improved themselves with a factor 10 compared to the debut album and it made me curious of what the band can achieve in the future. If they keep on going like this it can only be great things what we can expect from them. "

Finlands Nowen offer Essence Of Fear, their second full length album for your listening pleasure. I say pleasure because that is what it is. From start to end, this album crosses the boundaries of death metal, death/thrash and melodic death metal, there is at no quarter that this album takes too much from any one genre, there is an art present that provides a combination of all styles, much to the bands credit.

Crown Of Fallacy does rub shoulders with powerhouses such as American giants Death, there is a touch of progressive death metal atmospherics, and a great funky bass line appearing from time to time screaming of metal competency. If that is not enough, take the thundering bass lines and drum work akin to the likes of Viking warriors Amon Amarth which puts the heavy into this album, but ever so subtlety. Vocally, Lappis (Mikko Lappalainen) tears through the fabric of this hybrid death metal album composition, the range is more suited to the heavier end of the scale, but I cannot say that this causes be any discernible glitches and the way songs like the aforementioned are crafted together, it means your time is invested wisely. Each track is crafted in such a clever way, it does not give you an opportunity to pick out individual moments of glory, by this I mean I almost get a little complacent, Im expecting great things with each second that passes, perhaps this makes it a little too much to take in, I am not one to stifle creativity, as this is what you have here, but the death metal makes more noise than the death/thrash, a genre oversaturated in its nature, no matter how good songs like Acts of Deceit are and this does warrant a further half point in the ratings.

For from that to be a downside to this release, I just find that I want something that little bit extra after you are teased with some cracking assortment of ideas. Essence Of Fear is a well-rounded effort that will hopefully not fall into the ether of obscurity upon its release but lacks a little focus and specialisation towards one particular musical forte. Jostain löytyi seuraavanlaista tekstiä;

"Essence of Fear" is another staple for the band work, with more emphasis on thrash again. The band thrash on with enthusiasm, adding the more brutal deathy leaning here and there. The leads are really good, shining on the more death metal-laced moments (the excellent diverse opus "Crown Of Fallacy"). Still, thrash leads the pack with uncompromising headbangers like "Path Of Destruction", "Deadly Force", the maddening proto-death/thrasher "Acts Of Deceit", followed closely by more clever, technical exercises: "The Honor", and especially the engaging progressive closer "Essence Of Fear", a multi-faced composition which thrashes with passion surrounded by a couple of beautiful lyrical deviations and standout guitar work. Nowen started as Mikko Lappalainens solo project in 1999. He made one demo titled From Birth to Death by himself before he teamed up with some more musicians and came to what Nowen is nowadays. Anno 2012 the band comes with their second full length release Essence of Fear.

A combination of Death and Thrash with a melodic edge, Essence of Fear certainly got a slight touch of the great Melodic bands their country has. This works out well for them as they kept in modesty and do not allow the melodics to take over the purpose of it all. The band has a lot of strength within their compositions, having some moments of rest in which you could truly find the time to appreciate the instrumental part of their music and they set this right across the vehemence with which you get dragged along with the passion they have put into it.
Nowen is maybe not bringing you something new, it has some interesting parts into their sounds and some solos that can keep you listening for some times and overall it sticks together pretty well. Therefor this band gives you an good extension for your collection, worth to try! "

Acts of Deceitin lopusta tulee kovasti mieleen Anthraxin Caught in a Moshin lopetus, eikä varmaankaan sattumalta?

Many death metal combos are brutal these days especially at the highest levels, but far too often cold, soulless and beat one of their Mucke with the turns of the brain. I often feel when listening stressed, annoyed or otherwise strained. Surely this will be because I've left my teen years long behind me, or do not have enough testosterone. Therefore, it was to listen to my not quite dewy ears a real pleasure "Essence Of Fear" by NOWEN.

NOWEN did it to me to conjure a nostalgic smile to your face. Mucke your breathing quite clearly the spirit of the late 80s and 90s. Sometimes I had to think of "Arise" by Sepultura. Are you saying that here is celebrated Old School Death Metal, Thrash and sometimes in the sometimes poaching in Black Metal. The album is wonderfully calm, sometimes a bit bumpy in the sound, not stressing me and gives me a good feeling, despite all Deathmetalligkeit. I can even listen to the band rehearsal. Normally I do because either nüscht or hear things relaxed. Perhaps the impression is created at this point, it would go on the album rather quiet to the point. Not at all. They are beaten and fiddled, it is a joy - but with a heart and not boring at all.

Perhaps a few words about the band. NOWEN come from Finland and first album in 10 years have moved into the number two shelves for only two years apart. Even the look of four Finns tend to remember the classics, I mean the style. Were loud Promo Sheet e.g. Fear and loathing feeling sponsors for the resulting album. So far so good.

Conclusion: Certainly, "Essence of Fear" is not a milestone in music history. Nevertheless, I liked it well. Who likes CARCASS and the old Sepultura stuff should definitely times risking one's ear. Playing tips: 'The Egotist' / 'Path of Destruction'"
