The death metal patrol entitled Spirit Disease was formed in 2002 in Finland. The band hasn't kept a hasty recording pace; their debut album was released in 2006, and this, their second full-lenght, came out now in 2011. They've had quite a few lineup-changes during these years, but it seems that the band has managed to turn these changes into a positive force.
 
As you might've already guessed from checking out the surprisingly purple cover image, the band drawns their influences from the 90s; so, if you like headbanging and the early works of Morbid Angel, At The Gates and Possessed, there's a fair chance you'll fancy Spirit Disease as well. "Retaliation" even has the usual crunchy 90s soundscape with powerful dynamics, but it's served with a small hint of today's cleanliness so that the album wouldn't sound like a mere pastiche. The group sounds further original due to their many influences from different fields of extreme music; for example, the opener fuses thrash metal and grindcore into a fast and catchy death metal-song, "One Bullet for You" has a great amount of d-beat throughout it's lenght, and "Hoarse" is a (very unnecessary) six-second tribute to Napalm Death and the like.
 
Spirit Disease sounds fresh despite their oldschool approach. The group is experienced with their instruments as well as the different compositional possibilities in creating a catchy song filled with aggression, and have enough skill, daring, and dark humour to seamlessly fuse it all together. The hoarse shouts and growls reveal the lyrics easily enough, which makes the songs even more catchy since the listener has the possibility to shout along to the simplistic and aggression-filled tales of hate and acts of violence. The vocalist has a good, deep voice, and the backing shout choir helps them uphold their power.
 
The album isn't perfect, though. The crunchy guitars are backed by skillful drums with a powerful clean sound, that, despite their liveliness, don't really bring any heaviness to the songs. The drums make the songs more appealing and catchy, but make too much of a contrast with the guitars, thus weakening the overall soundscape. The bass guitar fills this emptiness nicely with its vast pulse, but it doesn't help in hiding the small weaknesses in the riffs. The most thrash-oriented riffs would've needed more flesh around them, and grindcore-elements are not the best choice for this.
 
One has to note, though, that music like this isn't meant to be analyzed and dissected in detail, nor is there any sense in doing so. "Retaliation" is a great album for headbanging, and the group can only improve their music by further rehearsing and tightening the songs further; there is still some extra fat to be cut of from the killing machine built of muscle. I think they could also further explore the realms of d-beat, as its simplisticity and rhythmic qualities seem to be near the center of the band's pleasure zone.
 
An extra thumbs up is awarded for the 100% fitting visual side. Not many bands would be able to pull of something as tacky.

Niin energinen ja repivä kuin debyytti Annihilation (2006) olikin, levyltä jäi mieleen lähinnä rikollisen tarttuva What's God Got To Do With It ja hitaasti möyrivä The Deathlike Gloom. Tällä kertaa yksittäisiä hittibiisejä tuntuisi löytyvän enemmänkin, sillä riffit ovat melodisempia ja tarttuvia koukkuja ripotellaan tasaisesti koko pituudelle.
 
Soundia on rumpujen osalta hitusen siistitty, mutta tyyli sinänsä ei ole muuttunut. Retaliation on pääosin nopeatempoista death/thrash-osastolle sujahtavaa vihaa, jonka sovitustyössä on nähty selvästi vaivaa. Laulaja Tuberculosiksen säälimätön ja ainutlaatuinen kurkkuterrori antaa paketille ripauksen ylimääräistä potkua.
 
Avausraita Keep the Hate tuo mileeen God Dethronedin paremmat hetket, ja levyn päättävä nimiraita kulkee tanakasti kuin Bolt Throwerin ja Slayerin sekoitus ikään. Väliin mahtuu huomattava määrä mehevillä sooloilla ja melodisesti sävytetyllä pikariffittelyllä varustettua monipuolista sävellystyötä.

Puolihuomaamatta liki vuosikymmenen toimineeseen helsinkiläisbändiin on kasautunut kokemusta musiikin alalta vielä paljon pitemmältä ajalta ja sehän ei voi olla kuulumatta. Soitto jyrää kirurginveitsen tarkkuudella ja panssaridivisioonan voimalla. Thrash-, death metal- ja grind-malmista yhteen valettu lopputuote, bändin toinen kokonainen albumi, on ensi kuulemalta hyvin lupaava. Taisteluväsymys alkaa kuitenkin painaa kuulijaa muutaman kierroksen jälkeen.
 
Sen, mitä kansikuvan triplaputkitykillä, kolmipiippuisella konekiväärillä ja kahdella nelireikäisellä raketinheittimellä varustettu panssarivaunu lupaa, bändi pitää. Telauraa pitkin painellaan putket paukkuen yli risujen ja männynkäpyjen niin sävellysten kuin karkeiden lyriikoidenkin osalta. Kokonaisuus on teknisesti pätevä mutta ei loppujen lopuksi kovin mielenkiintoinen. Levyn sisäinen ranking on sekin vaikea pala päätettäväksi: ei aallonpohjia, ei korkeita huippuja. Love Is Blood Red sentään vetää puoleensa joka kerran, vaikka muuten ei keskittymiskyky tahdo koko aikaa riittää.
 
Lopulliseksi tunnelmaksi jää hienoinen pettymys siitä, että hyvien ainesten ja osaavien tekijöiden summa oli näinkin yllätyksetön. Tämä taistelu voidaan katsoa voitetuksi, mutta arsenaalia pitää laajentaa, jos bändi haluaa voittaa koko sodan.

Hailing from Finland, Spirit Disease has been spreading their brand of thrashing death metal and grind-spurts since 2002. Retaliation is the bands second LP and is quite aptly described by the groups own description of their music: steamrolls like a bull on steroids and grooves like a headless rhino. One can find the kind of 90s brutality that At The Gates perfected while also seeing touches of Bolt Thrower and a tiny bit of fellow Finns Rotten Sound in there as well. The guys remember to add the more-than-proficient solo and infusions of melody here and there while overall keeping it nicely brutal.
 
The bands lengthy history shows commendably in their technical chops from the mincing blast beats to the pummelling stringassaults. Singer Tuberculosis brings a slightly muddy yet hefty growl/screech aching to the might of David Vincent while guitarist Koskinen and bassist Sallanen seemingly provide vocals for those always-tasty-when-done-right gang shouts.
 
With song titles like Keep The Hate, Nothing But Death and Suffocate In Depravity, you can easily deduct the records thematic lines. The intensity and quality is retained in grand fashion on speedy tracks like Collateral Damage and Spawn Of Satan while Love Is Blood Red (my favourite thus far) introduces a brilliantly thrashing mode that combines some melodies and groovy riffage to great effects.
 
On the lesser side we find a plodding track like Watch Them Die and You Should Be Killed, which mostly comes off as a pastiche of a Cannibal Corpse-scorcher that succumbed to rigor mortis way too soon. Fortunately versatility is provided near the end. One Bullet For You momentarily turns the course toward Discharge and other advocators of the D-beat. The 6-second burst Hoarse clearly feels like an homage to Napalm Deaths more progressive moments. The album closer Destroy Everything With Hate reaches out for slightly more epic grounds with massive, tempo-changing riffs, sweet double bass furries, a furious solo battle between the guitarists and a seriously infectious chorus that should slay on the live stage.
 
This album was my first encounter with Spirit Disease and it was a very pleasant one. The production job is strong on every front and with the exception of a few lazy tunes, these guys seem to have a knack for catchy brutality. I expect ever improving and more versatile things from these guys in the near future so keep those orifices peeled.

Pikimustan huumorin päälle ymmärtävät nihilistit ja misantroopit yhtykää, on jälleen syy kytkeä stereoihin virta! Vuosikausia death metalin eri osa-alueiden parissa teutaroinut Spirit Disease on vihdoin saanut toisen täyspitkänsä ulos. Ihmiskunnalle suunnatun suorasukaisen vihapuheen jatkeena yhtye tarjoaa monipuolisen kattauksen riffejä ja melodioita näppäriin sovituksiin kiedottuina. Kyllä näillä muutama nyrkinheristys irtoaa, suuntaan jos toiseenkin.
 
Omalaatuiseksi ilman väkisin vääntämistä rakentunut ilmaisu on Spirit Diseasen vahvimpia puolia. Se ei väistä melodioita vaan käyttää niitä tehokkaasti brutaalisti groovaavan musisointinsa jännitteenä. Rujosta otteesta pitää tiukasti huolen myös Tuberculosiksen monipuolinen rähjäys ja syvä kurlaus, jotka tupruttavat ilahduttavan tulista tunteenpaloa. Sitä olisin mielelläni kuullut enemmän myös soundien kautta, sillä sävellysten voima olisi varmasti välittynyt paremmin hieman rosoisemman ja elävämmän äänimaailman kautta. Painavaa tavara on tällaisenaankin mutta muutama ylilyönti piristäisi kokonaisuutta.
 
Tempovaihteluiden kautta rakentuva levy hyödyntää selkeitä rakenteita ja dynaamista etenemistä. Teknisesti hyvin taitava soittajisto sitoo myös tyylitajuisesti tykityksen ja lanaamisen parhaat puolet ehjäksi jatkumoksi, joka ei pyyhällä päättömästi ohitse saatikka jää jalkoihin junnaamaan. Retaliation onkin pitkästä aikaa moderni metallilevy, jonka kuuntelee erittäin mielellään alusta loppuun yhdeltä istumalta. Hyviä sävellyksiä löytyy koko levyn matkalta. Onpa mukana jälleen myös perinteinen sekuntiralli, jonka jälkeen vielä viimeinen napakka vihanpurkaus pistää kaiken sileäksi. Tajuttomuus saavutetaan tyylikkään tarkasti, kaksimielistä ja -teräistä miekkaa huolella heiluttaen.

Spirit Disease - Retaliation Tormentor Erich: Once, very long ago, I received via this website the first E.P. from Spirit Disease. Redemption Denied made a good impression back then. Despite the poor production it became clear that these Finnish guys knew how to make some firm death metal with some thrash metal and little grindcore influences in it as well. But after this release I lost track about the band. Fortunately I got a change to make up for this now, because with Retaliaton Spirit Disease present us a complete new album, and also this one is a shot right on target.
 
Spirit Disease punches in thirty-eight minutes eleven tracks through your speakers. Those of you who like to listen to stuff like old Carcass, Dismember, Napalm Death, Devine Empire, Impaled Nazarene and also to acts like Tormented or Bloodride could give this one a try. The songs are very catchy without losing power. The typical metal riffs, the decent solos and the pounding drums are played professionally and together with the filthy vocals (with a black metal scream also in it every now and then) the whole package is transformed into compact songs. The clear production (but not too sweet, thank god for that) makes sure that everything is enjoyable to listen to and the little and subtle attached humor is good for some extra credits as well.
 
This time only the cover says already enough about the album. A purple tank with a triple barrel: BOOM!

Die alte finnische Keule!
Es scheint ganz so, als definiere sich die finnische Szene in den letzten Monaten komplett neu. Dem Bewusstsein, dass Keyboards und Konsorten ein ausschlaggebender Punkt für den landestypischen Sound sein müssen, folgt inzwischen ein Verlangen nach Ursprünglichkeit und Basisnähe, wie man es im Land der 1000 Seen schon seit mehr als einer Dekade nicht mehr vernommen hat - und es fühlt sich richtig gut an!
 
SPIRIT DISEASE als Vertreter der Old-School-Fraktion setzen diesbezüglich ein klares Zeichen. Zwar liegt ihr letzter, ebenfalls geachteter Release "Annihilation" schon ganze fünf Jahre zurück, doch schon seinerzeit markierten die Finnen einen blitzsauberen Einstieg in die Szene, der der Band auch außerhalb der Landesgrenzen etwas Aufmerksamkeit bescherte. Letztere sollte "Retaliate" nun ohne große Probleme einfahren; die Scheibe ist ein absolutes Brett, handwerklich astrein, musikalisch indes ganz im Sinne des klassischen Elchtods inszeniert. SPIRIT DISEASE halten das Tempo geschmeidig hoch, blasten stellenweise mit einem sehr angenehmen Groove, versteifen sich dabei aber auch nicht auf simples, plumpes Highspeed-Geballer. Nummern wie 'Watch Them Die' und das fast schon eingängige 'Nothing But Death' bieten genügend Abwechslung, um der Radikalität auch einen gewissen Anspruch entgegenzusetzen, ohne dabei den Old-School-Charakter des Materials zu verleugnen.
 
Nichtsdestotrotz ist "Retaliate" nun kein Album, das besonders von seiner Individualität zehrt. SPIRIT DISEASE fügen sich einem Sound, den sie nicht mehr neu erfinden können. Doch bei jedem Impuls, jedem kleinen Funken, der die lange Jahre eingeschlafene Szene wieder zum Leben erweckt, wird man umso hellhöriger - und diesen Impuls können diese Finnen dem Genre mit "Retaliate" ununterbrochen geben!

Orkesterissa on taas pitkästä aikaa viisi jäsentä uusimman jäsenemme, eli herra Ringvallin liityttyä orkesteriin. Nyt sitä sitten treenataan niin maan perkeleesti, ja sitten lähdetään keikoille. Jäi nimittäin levynjulkaisukeikkakin soittamatta silloin kun viimeisin levy ulostui. Eiköhän tilanne korjaannu, kunhan tästä keikkakuntoon päästään...

After a long search for a new drummer, Spirit Disease is pleased to announce the addition of mister Ringvall to their lineup. After playing for several years in local death metal bands such as Thy Legacy, Scaur and Murhain he has now joined us. Hes a skilled drummer and we feel he is a great asset to the band and look forward to working together both on stage and in the studio.
 

 
We parted ways amicably with our former drummer Hänninen (now playing in Brymir) in February 2011, so its been a long time for all of us waiting to find the right guy to play with us. We are really excited to be playing music again and looking forward to playing live with our new lineup with a setlist filled with new songs from our latest album Retaliation and of course a bunch of older material. Playing live again should be very interesting we have never played most of the new stuff in front of an audience before. We will start booking shows immediately and will most likely start playing again in late 2011.
