Relapselta uutta bändiä tiskiin. Törmäsin tähän tapaukseen itseasiassa Facebookissa, sivulla oli mainos jossa mainittiin sludge ja bändit Jesus Lizard, Helmet ja The Melvins. No, pitihän tuota linkkiä sitten klikata ja ihan oivaa materiaalia sieltä löytyikin. Mainittuen bändien lisäksi tästä paistaa läpi Down ja Panteran myöhempi matsku. Ihan mainiosti potkii ainakin itselleni. Koitin tehdä bändistä vähän taustatutkimusta mutta tiedon rippeet olivat varsin harvassa. Orkesteri on kuitenkin kerennyt olemaan olemassa jo yli 15 vuotta ja kakkosalbuminsa (uusin on järjestyksessä viides) Drop Out vuodelta 1996 näkyy saaneen varsin hyviä arvosteluja.

Onko se doomia? Entäpä sludgea? Vai onko se sittenkin hardcorea? Ei, ei ja vielä kerran ei, sillä tänä vuonna täysi-ikäistynyt 16 keittelee myrkyllisen soppansa kaikista edellä mainituista ainesosista, ja heittää sekaan vielä sormustilliset stoneria sekä death metallia. Kolme varttia siis pelkkää murhaa jossain Kylesan ja Unsanen äänitaajuuksilla.
 
"Bridges to Burn" on kova pähkinä purtavaksi näin kriitikon vinkkelistä tarkasteltuna. Ei siksi, että albumi sisältäisi jotain ennen kuulematonta, vaan sen takia että kalifornialaiskvartetin monisyinen materiaali väistelee "yleisesti hyväksyttyjä" genre-luokituksia teflonin tavoin. Tuolla 16 riffittelee NOLA-hengessä, täällä nelikko pistää pitin pyörimään NYHC-huput päässään ja siellä yhtye taas svengaa kuin hirvi - yrttien avustuksella tietenkin. Ei sovi myöskään unhoittaa Helmetin ja vanhemman Entombedin vaikutusta Sixteenin ulosantiin. Kirsikkana kakussa keikkuu Chrisin vihaa huokuvat vokaalisuoritteet, jotka eivät kuitenkaan ole perinteistä sludge-kärinää, vaan ihka aitoa hardcore-huutoa (muutamilla puheosuuksilla ryyditettynä). Kuuntele vaikkapa So Broken Down, niin tiedät mistä 16 pissii.
 
Junttaavista breakdowneista rullaavaan stoneriin ja ahdistavasta matelusta vimmaiseen hc-myllyyn tätä kaikkea on "Bridges to Burn". Viimeistään tämän kuka ties monennenko julkaisun myötä kalifornialaisten olisi jo aika nousta ylös ojasta ja allikosta kohti korkeampaa tietoisuusluokkaa.

Enduring, seminal and nihilistic to the core Californias 16 have reformed and bounced back with the most intense, bleak and powerful album of their lengthy career. Theres no optimism here, throughout this awesome sludge-packed dirty affair Cris Jerue and co fist-fuck their way through 12 vignettes of how shit life can be. In fact, the titles alone sum up the mood of this album: Throw In The Towel, Broken Down, and Monday Bloody Monday (which sees Cris barking, Its the worst day of my life and you know he means every single word!). The soundtrack to a life of living in the gutter? You bet!
 
For fans of: Crowbar, Kylesa, Unsane, Black Cobra

Jasper: 2008 marked the year that the notorious American sludgecore band 16 officially celebrated their sixteenth birthday, as well as the year in which the three original members (Bobby Ferry, Chris Jerue, en Jason Corley) decided to give the band a go again. Relapse was bright enough to contract them, et voila: Bridges To Burn was born. Who had ever thought that these arch-pessimists would ever made a comeback like this; the band known by the album called Dropout, and the its blatant lifes motto Life sucks, leave me alone?
 
Bridges To Burn starts of nicely pissed off the way we know these guys with an ironically stated Throwing The Towel, at least lyrically nothing has changed and singer Chris Jerue has dipped his pen in the same happy-to-be-depressed ink as we have learned to love over the years. The rudimentary, crude words are an aspect I had some difficulty with at first, with the level of poetry rising hardly above Max Cavalera-simplicity. However, this band has always portrayed itself as being from a lower class underground background, so the lyrics fit the whole picture quite well.
 
The voice tone and the music sound angrier than ever before. The record is constantly filled with a rabid rage, and this is a sharp contrast with the more laid-back stoner wails of Dropout. 16 keeps hammering you on the head with a spiked club, but they did not forget add a couple of killer sludge riffs. Man Interrupted could have been a Kirk Windstein (Crowbar, Down) song! This combination of raw power and swinging southern sludge is what makes Bridges To Burn such a winner in the end. Apart from the fact that fans all over the world can rejoice over the fact that 16 is finally back and might even tour Europe soon, this band has succeeded to write a stunning comeback album with twelve catchy sludgecore anthems, that are easily shouted along like You Let Me Down (Again). Luckily 16 does exactly the opposite of what they preach with this album, in any case Bridges To Burn makes me a very happy man.

I dont know if you ever had the chance to come across a Relapse Records promo CD, but the US label does something I find nice and really helpful. On the back of each promo CD there is a section that mentions bands that sound similar to the specific band. The names mentioned on the back of this promo CD were more than tempting since bands like DOWN, EYEHATEGOD and CROWBAR remain on my top list.
 
The band is based in Los Angeles, California, USA. They were formed in 1991, something that was quite a surprise for me, and have numerous releases under their belt (albums, split CDs, EPs etc). Their fifth full-length album and first through Relapse is surely something I didnt expect. You know, something like a pleasant surprise...
 
DO you want a band that will be groovy in a totally Stoner way, but it will also have the filth of Sludge? Do you want something that will be as close to GOATSNAKE and CROWBAR as it will be to BONGZILLA and WEEDEATER? 16 is the answer, a name simple and straightforward just like this bands music. "Bridges To Burn" is a bluesy Metal punch in your face with heavy as fuck riffing that is destined to play louder than hell! Thumbs up for the production, too, since I dont know who is responsible for this sound, but the guy managed to create something you could call polished dirt. Dirty enough to maintain the feeling, yet clear enough to have a pleasant and solid sound.
 
As someone said in his blog about this album, "Hello Mr. 2009! Check out this shit!" (just imagine his face while he was writing this). I guess that 2009 will be a bit more successful for 16, at least more successful than these guys expected, since such an album gives a nice push to the band. Way to go mates!

Relapse lyö välillä, ikävä kyllä sanoa, vaikka suurimpiin ja mahtavimpiin metal-levy-yhtiöäihin kuuluukin, kätensä paskaan. Onneksi tällä kertaa kuitenkaan ei ole käynyt niin. Jo vuonna 1992 alkunsa saanut 16 on jotain aivan muuta, ennemminkin kultakimpale kaiken paskaksi muuttuneen musiikkibisneksen suolen sisällä. Vuonna 2003, neljän pitkäsoiton jälkeen yhtye lyötiin jäihin ja bändin jäsenet keskittyivät muihin projekteihin. Kuitenkaan mikään näistä viritelmistä ei suonut heille samankaltaista tyydytystä kuin 16 ja näin, vuonna 2007 oli aika räjäyttää maailmalta jälleen tajunta 16 muodossa.
 
On lausuttava herran nimeen kiitos ja kumarrettava Californiaan päin. Kiitoksia teille, olette tehneet elämästäni helpompaa... Noh, ehkä tuo oli liioittelua, mutta pirun hyvä juttu oli tämä yhtyeen kimppaan palaaminen, sillä Brigdes to Burn on perkeleen tiukka paketti hossua, sludgea, deathiä ja aimo annos stoner- ja miksei myös doom-vaikutteita.
 
16 revittelee levyllään ilman paineita genren tai toisen suuntaan ja se varmasti tekeekin yhtyeen ulosannista niin vangitsevaa kuin se on. Jo levyn ensimmänen raita Throw in the Towel tekee homman selväksi. Se iskee kuin Mike Tyson keskitempoisella tahdilla yhdistellen siihen uskomattoman korviarepivää purevaa groovea. Kertosäkeisiin kiihdytetään snadisti ja näin kappaleeseen luodaan vaihtelevuutta. Tätä on 16 kokonaisuutenakin. Erittäin toimiva konsepri. sanokaa minun sanoneen. Toki levyltä löytyy muitakin yksittäisiä helmiä, kuten Man Interrupted, jossa vokalisti Jerue näyttää parhainta osaamistaan huutojen ja kirkumisten saralla. Biisi on muutenkin levyn parhaita sludgen esiin tuovista vedoista ja näin kovin omaan mieleeni.
 
Bridges to Burn on perkeleellisen kova. Levyn jaksaa kaivaa yhä uudelleen ja uudelleen soittimeensa ja ei siinä kaikki, kuuntelemalla kuunnella sen antia.
