Monks oli niin kummalliselta vaikuttavaa tavaraa, että olin aluksi varma sen olevan joku reilusti jälkikäteen tehty kusetusyritys. Onneksi olin väärässä.
 
o Soft Machine - Third
 
Canterbury-skenen jazzrockia, bändin tunnetuin levy. Jäänyt itselle vähän vieraaksi.
 
o Can - Tago Mago
o Can - Future Days
 
Can oli "krautrock"-yhtyeistä tunnetuin ja menestynein. Tago Magolla on mainio "Halleluwah", Future Days on kuitenkin helpompaa kuunneltavaa.
 
o Sisters of Mercy - Floodland
 
80-luvun goottirockin tunnetuimpia teoksia. Tahdittajan virkaa toimittaa rumpukone Dr. Avalanche. Kyllä tämä kannattaa kuunnella ihan This Corrosioninkin vuoksi, jos vain Andrew Eldritchin ölinää sietää.

Z-kirjaimella alkavissa sukunimissä on ehkä jotain magiaa. Jos Zappa oli monipuolinen ja laaja-alainen, niin sitä on myös Zorn. Mies on tehnyt kaikkea klezmerjazzista jousikvartettojen kautta soundtrack-musiikkiin ja avantgardeheviin. Tätä nimenomaista levyä en ole kuullut, mutta Johniin kannattaa tutustua.
 
o Pixies - Doolittle
 
Pixies oli suunnaton vaikuttaja monelle 90-luvun alun rockyhtyeelle, joista vähäisimmäksi ei jäänyt Nirvana. Bändi rustasi paljon hyviä, kompakteja ja sopivan kieroja rockbiisejä.
 
o Aphex Twin - Selected Ambient Works 85-92
 
Erittäin kaunista konemusiikkia, vähemmän rähisevää kuin moni Aphex Twinin muu tuotos.
 
o DJ Shadow - Endtroducing
 
Vähän samaa kuin edellämainittu. DJ Shadow kasasi koko levyn sataprosenttisesti muualta otetuista sampleista, mukana on niin Metallicaa kuin Pekka Pohjolaakin. Täysin erityylisistä sampleista kasattu huisin hienoja ja omannäköisiä biisejä.

Tässä Feggyn kaivamasta listasta meikäläiselle oudoiksi jääviä nimiä ja levyjä. Olin itselleni armollinen... Kelpuutin mukaan, kunhan jotain tiedän tai olen kuullut. 1990- ja 2000- luvulla olen tippunut yleissivistyksen kärryiltä tarkkailuluokalle; pelkkä apuopetus ei riitä, vaan tarvittaisiin järeämpiä toimia. Oli sun listassasi useita kymmeniä sellaisia, että reaktio lukiessa oli: "Älä narraa!" Totta kai oot kuunnellut, et vain muista.

Penteleesti oli muuten sellaisia että just se listattu levy puuttuu hyllystä, mä kun en ole mikään keräilijä. No, ainahan ne voi käydä kuuntelemassa Feggyn luona jos sattuu siihen kaupunkiin asiaa

Tuossa pidemmässä listassa en edes vaatinut itseltäni että just ko levy löytyis hyllystä. Mulla nyt kuitenkin on sellaisiakin suosikkilevyjä, joilla ei tuollaiselle listalle ehkä olis edes asiaa... vaikka aika hyvällä maullahan noi oli koottu.

On tietysti, eli varmaan muitakin vastaavia löytyy, kuten edellä mainitsin. En minä mitään äärimmäisen tarkkaa työtä tuon listan kanssa tehnyt, vaan jätin siihen kaikki ne mitkä eivät sillä sekunnilla tuntuneet tutuilta. Verrattuna listan muihin nimiin nuo olivat kuitenkin kaikkein tuntemattomimmat. Eli turha ainakaan minun on lähteä "kapakkakeskusteluissa pätemään". Ja tottakai noista nimistä moni oli tuttu esim. lehdistä, vaikken musiikkia tunnekaan.
 
Jos keskustelun alkuperäistä ideaa ajatellaan, niin kyllä nuo nimet mielestäni ovat ovat jo jotain muuta kuin sitä ihan perustietoa, yleissivistystä. Ainakin 50-70 -luvun osalta, tuoreemmasta en ole varma. Mutta sehän riippuu kuuntelijan omasta kuunteluhistoriasta mitä kukin yleissivistyksenä pitää. Kuten jo alussa mainitsin.

Vieläkö yhden kerran jaksais... Eli sivistynyt rokkari ne varmasti tuntee (itse en sellainen ole, koska Stan Getz ei siis ole tuttu, mutta enpä tosin ole muutenkaan rokkari, kun en elä rokkarin elämää), mutta jatsina ne eivät mielestäni kuulu siihen tässä haettuun rockmusiikin perustietoon. Populaarimusiikkiin kyllä. Miles Davisin funk/fuusio/mitälie -jutut ovat tietysti sellaisia, että ne voisi siihen "rokkarin yleissivistykseen" kuuluakin.
 
Mutta joo, tää oli viimeinen kerta kun selvitin tämän ketjun perusajatusta. Yritän seuraavaa ketjua avatessani olla selkeäsanaisempi ja vääntää rautalankaa vähän yksinkertaisemmille mutkille.
 
EDIT: Tai no, turhaanpa minä tätä jankutan, koska tuon musiikillisen yleissivistyksen rajaaminen pelkästään rockmusiikkiin on kuitenkin ihan mahdotonta, koska jokainen joka jotain rockmusiikista haluaa tietää tulee väistämättä törmäämään jatseihin ja bluusseihin ja vaikka mihin.

Mutta joo, tää oli viimeinen kerta kun selvitin tämän ketjun perusajatusta. Yritän seuraavaa ketjua avatessani olla selkeäsanaisempi ja vääntää rautalankaa vähän yksinkertaisemmille mutkille.

EDIT: Kun tämä nyt listaamiseksi meni, niin tehkääpä huviksenne lista vaikka aloitusviestin esittämän idean pohjalta, eli listatkaa kultakin vuosikymmeneltä 5-10 merkittävää albumia tai biisiä, jotka pitää tietää ja tuntea... Ei missään nimessä enempää kuin kymmenen, mielummin vähemmän. Eikä siis välttämättä niitä omia suosikkeja, vaan sellaisia joilla on ollut yleistä merkitystä keskivertolevyä enemmän. Varmaan ne kaikki löytyvät noilta pitkiltä listoilta, mutta tiivistetään semmoinen perustietopaketti noviisille.

Discoa pitäis vielä saada, oisko Saturday night feverin soundtrack sitten semmoinen, olettaen, että moinen on olemassa…
 
Tavattoman konservatiivinen ja tylsä lista, mutta semmoinenhan minäkin olen. Oliko noillakaan nyt sitten kaikilla mitään merkitystä? Pistols, Ramones, Gaye ja Sabbath ovat vaikuttaneet paljon moniin myöhempiin bändeihin, mutta nuo muut ehkä eivät niinkään. Paitsi Clash, edit. huom.
 
Mitä 70-luvun musiikista sitten pitäisi muuten tietää. Hevi ja proge, punk, soul, disco, rockabilly revival, glamrock, monia tunnettuja laulaja-lauluntekijöitä, poliittiset laululiikkeet, suomirockin nousu?

Mitä muuta? Gene Vincent, Fats Domino, Coasters, Drifters, Duane Eddy, Pat Boone, Everly Brothers, Johnny Burnette? Chicago blues, doo-wop yms. lauluyhtyeet, gospel, kantri, rhythm&blues, rockabilly, tyttöyhtyeet (vaikka niiden kukoistuskausi taisi olla vasta seuraavan vuosikymmenen puolella)?

Chuck Berryn puuttuminen listalta on kyllä emämunaus. Miehen levytyshän lähetettiin jopa avaruusluotaimen mukana kohti toisia sivilisaatioita.
