"The Ibanez RG550 is an RG series guitar model first introduced in 1987 as part of the Roadstar Deluxe series. It was the first RG featuring the new body shape specially designed for the Ibanez JEM shape and what also would become the standard RG shape.
 
The RG550 was introduced as a more affordable alternative for the Ibanez JEM777. Like the JEM777, the RG550 has a basswood body with the new body shape, a thin maple neck and the Edge tremolo, later replaced by the Lo Pro Edge tremolo. Instead of DiMarzio pickups, Ibanez own American Designed pickups were used and the RG550 also lacks some cosmetic features such as the Lion's Claw, Monkey Grip and Disappearing Pyramid inlays.
 
The original RG550 was discontinued after 1994. A new RG550 was introduced in 1997. In 1995 and 1996, a model based on the RG550 with rosewood fingerboard was issued for some areas as the RG550-R. For the twentieth anniversary of the RG series in 2007, the 1987 RG550 was reissued as the RG550MXX (maple fingerboard) and RG550RXX (rosewood fingerboard).

The Ibanez RG750 is an RG series guitar model, introduced in 1988 as part of the Roadstar Deluxe series. It is similar to the RG550 introduced a year earlier, but features DiMarzio made IBZ/USA pickups, a bound rosewood fingerboard and sharktooth inlays (alo known as Himalaya inlays in Japan).
 
During its production run, several changes were made to the RG750. In 1990, a new neck pickup and finishes with color-matched headstocks were introduced. In 1991 the mid pickup was changed as well. Finally, 1992 models got the Lo Pro Edge tremolo.
 
The RG750 was discontinued after 1992. In 1994 a similar looking model was introduced as the RG550LTD.

The RG series was first introduced in 1987 as a derivative to the Ibanez JEM and Universe series by Steve Vai, contrary to the more popular opinion that Rocky George.
 
The RG in the Ibanez RG name does not mean Rocky George, in reality they mean Roadstar Guitar, although these instruments differ significantly from the original Roadstar II series, introduced in the early 1980s.
 
All of the RG550s, 560s, 565s, 570s, 670s 750s, 760s and 770s have a version of the Ibanez Edge tremolo, be it Original or Lo-Pro. The Edge tremolo incorporated several manufacturing changes when compared to the original Floyd Rose, including increased mass, relocated fine tuners and improved locking posts. The Locking Posts are no longer used as of the 2003 model year along with the introduction of the Edge Pro.
