Osta mieluummin G2. Ilman pedaalia ja USBia, kuitenkin. Itse ostin G2:n uutena ja sain mukaan virtalähteen + 2 piuhaa = 100e. Käytettynä napsaset erillisen pedaalin jostain.

G2 on ainakin mun korvaan mukava laite.

I just had the good fortune of having two interesting boxes show up on my front door. I haven’t had a lot of time to play with them, but I thought that I would give my first impressions.

Zoom G2.1u

First of all, I bought this unit just out of curiosity. I’ve always kind of liked zoom effects. I never thought the distortions sounded “accurate” or “organic”, I just liked them. I always like the simplicity of their gear as well. The G2.1u is a decent little box. It’s arguably the prettiest box out there. The box seems rugged enough. The knobs and pedals might be a bit questionable, but likely more than I’ll ever need. Considering the poor shipping packaging that was used for this guy, it's got to be a tough cookie to have survived the trip from Florida unscathed.

One of the big things that I was looking forward to was the included USB port. I had in my mind ASIO drivers for low latency recording, good editing software, etc. Instead what I got is a USB port that really does next to nothing. I’m not sure what Zoom had in mind when they added this thing, but it seems to be a complete waste. If I’m missing anything, then please someone, let me know… As far as I can tell there is no editing software. It does come with Cubase LE which is a nice addon. Unfortunately, the only way that you can connect thru the USB port is by setting up the ASIO Multimedia option in Cubase. This is not real ASIO. You get about a ¾ second latency. Not nice.

Now to the sounds… As far as clean sparkly sounds, and lush chorused cleans, the G2 does a great job. It has some of the nicest sparkly cleans this side of the Tone lab. The acoustic sim is one of the better ones that I’ve ever heard. The distortions for rhythm needs range from really good Marshall type crunch sounds to kind of nasty rectifier type sounds. I did not find a single good lead sound that could cut the mustard. Maybe with some tweaking its there….

The effects sound really, really, good to my casual ears. The reverb and delay are excellent. The chorus may be one of the best that I’ve ever heard. I didn’t really like the pitch shifter. It just seemed kind of harsh and artificial to me.

The eq is really simple, but sometimes that can be a good thing. The amp sims seem to have a simple tone control, but there is a separate eq section (bass, treble, mid).

Now here is the interesting part… As I mentioned earlier, I could not find a good lead sound using just the unit, so I hooked up my pedal board to the front end. The chain consists of a: Behringer mic200, Boss NS1, Boss CS3, Boss DS1 (1979), Boss MT2, Digitech Death Metal, Zoom G2 to PA. Wow!!! The Distortion pedals all sounded really good with the Zoom and clean amp sim settings. They reminded me of how they sound when they drive one of my real tube amps. Leads became effortless. I was really impressed by this since I’ve found in the past that some multi effects units played nicely with external distortion units and some didn’t (the old zoom products and the new Tonelab are notoriously bad in this respect IMHO).

And now finally, for the one big caveat… Don’t try driving this thing with a really hot signal (ie EMG81). What you will get is instant farting sounds (digital distortion) on all of your peaks. This seems to be a hold over from Zooms Fire30 line of amps. If you can get the appropriate level of input into the unit, there are some excellent sounds in here. If you drive it too hard you will have nothing but farts. Not good…for a couple of extra bucks they should have added some form of sensitivity adjustment to the front end or at least a clip LED.
